I'm not really sure about the wording of my thesis...
In literature, a physical deformity can either be considered an impediment, or an advantage, depending on the personality of the character. While Laura from The Glass Menagerie, sees herself as inadequate because of her disability, Milkman, from Song of Solomon, uses his disability to his advantage.

Ha! I'm first. Well, I'm going to do my thesis on two characters from two separate books...Laura from The Glass Menagerie and Milkman from Song of Solomon:

Having physical deformities, Laura and Milkman form their life and identity from their own problems, but both demonstrate different ways of going about it.

Then I am going to go on by saying that Milkman uses it to his advantage, while Laura hide's from world's view.

oh my gosh!! sophie and I have the same thesis!! is that okay?

In The Glass Menagerie, the dysfunctional Wingfield family all have problems and overall monotonous lives. In order to escape these lack-luster existences, Tom and Laura choose to create their own little worlds to escape reality, while Amanda refuses to live in the present and is constantly reminiscing about her childhood.

I can back it up by talking about the glass collection, going to the movies, and the gentlemen callers. :)

ahh well i was going to use the physical deformity thing, but seeing as two other people already are i won't anymore.

Because the Wingfield family is so dysfunctional, the members of the family each have their own personal diversion that serves as a wat to escape from strange lives and to keep them happy.

Jim, the Gentleman Caller, and Tom and Laura’s father appear to parallel each other in thoughts, actions, and fate.

I have general ideas for my backup statements, but i have not chosen the ones I am going to use or fully written them out quite yet.

I'm not quite sure about my topic, but I'm interested in the religious symbolism in The Glass Menagerie. A thesis could be that neither Laura nor Amanda can function in an increasingly godless society because of their religiousness. Ex. Tom tells Laura to blow out her candles (religious connotations), as the world is lit by lightning(modern/ atheistic)That is assuming that Tom actually can function in society... : )
However, I also wanted to incorporate the idea that Jim is a modern Christ-like figure, and he is kind of the last chance at "salvation" for Laura, as imagined by Amanda- though he doesn't measure up (he brings in wine and candles to Laura but then chews gum noisily)
Some religous symbols: candles in Tom's final speech, Amanda and the "Christian Martyrs", Amanda looking like "suffering Jesus' mother, the altar candles of Laura's face burning out

At least once during one's lifetime, an escape from reality becomes a necessity. In Tennessee William's The Glass Menagerie, the fire escape to the Wingfiled's apartment serves a dual purpose. Not only does the fire escape serve as the only entrance to the apartment, but it also serves as an escape for both Tom and Laura from their highly dysfunctional and scrutinized lives.

I am not very concrete on the what the exact examples I am going to use to back up my thesis are but here it is! :)

A mother provides both love and affection for her children and acts as a catalyst for their lives. However In the Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, Amanda acts with force to excel her children's lives to more than she had while essentially driving both Tom and Laura further away.

The fate of a person may be determined not only by the choices they make, but also by others that influence their daily lives. Pauline destroys her own fate and influences the destruction of others that come in contact with her throughout different periods of their lives.

My thesis is, Due to that fact that Amanda lives in the illusionary world of her past her parenting style is influenced by this fact making unrealistic and unattainable standards for her children.

For my thesis, I want to compare Fleur, from "Tracks" and Guitar, from "Song of Solomon".
I am not totally set on this wording, but here is a basic idea of my thesis...

Despite their racial, gender, and social differences, the characters Fleur and Guitar portray similar qualities and embody a parallel understanding for numerous characteristics of life.

I know my argument may seem kind of random, considering that those two characters appear to be relatively different , but I am confident in my argument and have examples to back it up!! :]

The absence of a father figure in a dysfunctional family shapes to some extent the developing morale and mindset of the surrounding individuals, uniquely affecting each in their mental and emotional ability to cope with life.

Hi Everyone =]

For my thesis statement, I was thinking I would do something like...

In the play, The Glass Menagerie, Tom, the main character, subconsciously follows in his father's footsteps and acts towards others the way that his father acted towards him and his family.

I'm not exactly sure about the wording, but this is my main idea.

I will then go on to explain about how Tom leaves his family in the end, the way his father did. Tom is heartless towards his mother and sister the way his father was toward his family, etc.

I'm not sure about my wording yet either, I feel like my thesis might be a little too long...but here's what I have so far...

In Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, all members of the Wingfield family have difficulties facing reality, finding ways to mentally escape their inferior lives. Laura Wingfield, a young woman disoriented in the world she lives in, finds her escape through her glass menagerie collection. Significant in this collection appears to be a glass unicorn, an object that ideally represents Laura and her lifestyle.

My thesis is about Tracks; more specifically about Fleur.

Fleur's tragic personal history reflects the persecution, exploitation and eventual disintegration of the Northern Native Americans' culture, history and independence. Though powerful, Fleur must be recognized as the muted sacrifice; a receptacle and example of the injustices suffered by her people, unable to voice her own pains.

Yes, it can always be either or, but what then? You need a conclusive argument, possible whether deformity is considered an impediment or advantage, it signifies __________________ to the reader.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

The last comment was for Sophie. Kate/Kat, I want you to think about whether or not this is really arguable, or if it an obvious statement.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Jacquie, What is the orinal topic? What I read is an interesting topic but needs to be turned into an arguable topic.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Alex - This is a fairly sophisticated argument. To make a statement like this you need to take out the "appear to"; take a stand and stick to it! I'm very interested in seeing what you come up with.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Kels- This is an interesting topic. There is certainly an excessive amount of material for this argument. Now, create your argument!

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Excellent idea! I look forward to reading your supporting argument for this scenic exposition.

ms. maines-

my arguement is that tom and laura escape their lives by creating their own little worlds, and that amanda escapes her current life by living in her childhood. is that enough to be an arguement?

-jacqueline :)

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Kara O. I like your idea.I'm not sure excel is the right word; look up the difference between excel and propel. See if you canb support this.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Jordan - I can't find the real argument in this statement. It seems very dijointed. What is the root of your topic. If the thesis begins unorganized, then it will be a train wreck!

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Marcella - Not the most original or compellinf argument, but it is an argument. Make sure to take a side; you cannot be left impartail.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Grace - What is the main thread that ties their similarities together?

Sophie H. said...

Ms. Maines, I'm not really sure if I answered the question you asked...I tried to expand on my statement to make an arguement, is this any better???

In literature, a physical deformity can either be considered an impediment, or an advantage, depending on the personality of the character. While Laura from The Glass Menagerie, sees herself as inadequate because of her disability, Milkman, from Song of Solomon, uses his disability to his advantage. This signifies to the reader who the true protagonist in a story is, based on who overcomes their own personal challenges.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Robin - You need to think of how to word it. make sure you work on the spelling of Toni before you write the paper. Good theses often use contrast, such as "although... but ..." This might work for yours: "Although women ultimately control their own behavior, Morrison ......"

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Jackie- You still have a great idea, but you need to focus your thought

Tom and Laura choose to create their own little worlds to escape reality, while Amanda refuses to live in the present and is constantly reminiscing about her childhood.

An interesting way to work with this topic would be to relate it to the fact that this is a memory play; therefore, it is actually all memory and all Tom's memory. You need to find something arguable. Read the arguments of some of your classmates and see if you can narrow your focus.
Write back - I can give you a nudge but I can't do the work for you.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Sophie - excellent! Make sure you have the author of both novels in your paper, as well.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Jenna - This is a psychoanalytical approach.to this play. I think it is a pretty good, if not entirely original, argument.

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Michela - He was quite young when his father left. A really interesting topic would be that Amanda's behavior causes Tom to react (or drives Tom away)in the same way as his absent father. Does this interest you at all?

Ms. Carey Miller said...

Jasmin- I can't find the argument there. It seems like statements of facts...Keep thinking.

Jordan J said...

Ms. Maines I revised my thesis so it would be great if you would let me know is this is okay or not.

The fate of a person may be determined not only by the choices they make, but also by others that influence their daily lives. Pauline destroys he own fate and influences the destruction of others that come in contact with her, by using her inner evil to minipulate their feelings.

hi Ms. Maines...I fixed my thesis...I hope it works now!

In Tenessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, Laura Wingfield, a young girl disoriented in the world she lives in, finds her escape through her glass menagerie collection. Significant in this collection appears to be her glass unicorn, whos horn is symbolic of Laura's insecurities and the issues she must overcome throughout her life.

I think there's an arguement in there now! :]
